Various views of the mountain scenery in North Cyprus
Alevkayasi (Halevga or Giailas) - elevation 935m (3068 ft)
A viewpoint on the path leading from Alevkayasi (Halevga) to the central ridge road. The road below
winds up from Degirmenlik (Kythrea) to Alevkayasi. The view overlooks the central plains of Cyprus
(known as the Mesaoria). On a clear day Nicosia and the Troodos Mountains are visible.
Sourp Magar Monastery is situated at a height of 550m (1800 ft) above sea level on the northern
slopes of the Besparmak mountains close to Alevkayasi. The monastery is dedicated to 'St Makarios
the Blessed'. Dating from the 12th Century, the building was established by Armenian monks fleeing
Byzantine rule. Remaining undiscovered for two decades they were able to worship in safety.
Abandoned in the late 17th Century, the monastery is now in disrepair.
